Congrats on the new house. I am sure once you guys are finished sprucing it up the way you want it... it will be everything you dreamed of.

It is interesting that you posted this today... especially the part about getting your ass back on the bike, in the pool, etc... your words not mine... after a two week break from working out for me... I got back in the pool today after actually a month and I had a goal in mind and almost gave into not completing it, but that little voice in the back of my head said do it. I needed to get back on track, it is so easy to get side tracked by things. It is true that we sometimes need to raise to the challenge even if it is the ones that we set for ourselves.

It is so true that sometimes it is hard to say no to the things around us that will side track where we what to go and end up... but I know when I personally don't give in to things like that it makes me feel good about myself.

Change is something that will take time to "get over it"... but I think we as people eventually get over it and embrace it and use the new situation and surroundings to our advantage.

Good Luck with the new coaching job... let us all know how it is going for you. Hope the family is doing well.

I am glad you finally got out a new blog update and that you are back on track after the big move. I am happy that you have taken on a differnt mind set now that you are all settling in.

You will figure out what type of art you can and will bring to the table down there... don't abandon the projects that have already started. I always find the way you bring your art to life very interesting.

Can't wait to hear more about life down in SC for you guys and how the girls are changing & growing as well.

Wow it has taken me a week to think about what you said so i can comment and we have only two weeks left. It is really getting difficult for me to leave my school family. I love the fact that I can walk down the hallway and kids I don't even know say hey to me. Or when I walk down the street of the "hood" and I am recognized and respected. There are so many things that we never did or took the opportunity to do while we were here. But as I am writing this I am hearing all the fun things we are not going to miss out on when we do move. This has been the toughest move so far and now that we are by ourselves it is going to be even harder. But as my best friend, Rosie always tells me "This too shall pass". And I will miss all of her encouragement words as well.

Agh, I hate that moving process; I have moved A LOT, most times voluntarily,occasionally with work. I hate leaving all that is familiar to me - I hate leaving shortcuts I've found, the small parks in unexpected places, the cool spots to relax. I find it hard to leave my friends, the weather I'v grown used, the scenery and hustle (or not) that I love. I start missing small obscure things before I've even left - going for a walk and seeing the same dog run towards me in greeting every day, the neighbour who waters her lawn at 6am each day - on and on the list goes, my brain becoming oversensitive to all that I'll leave behind. And it is hard when I first move - not knowing where I fit in, getting lost a few times until I learn my way around, establishing my new life and home surroundings...and then gradually, gradually I realise this place has its goods too, now I have knowledge of what I've left behind and this new place - often it takes me up to 2 years to really appreciate a new place. But I've found that EVERY place I've lived has had its pros and cons; I still miss parts of cities I've lived in the past, wish I could fit those parts into this current life. But I can't. And yet the thought of leaving where I've now been for SIX years (a PR) - Vancouver, BC - terrifies me, I LOVE this place! BUT the time may come in the next few years when I have to face that possibility - and I'll just have to remind myself of all I've learned with my past moves - I will grieve all that I will lose, I will promise myself I will retire here way down the track, I will take a year to learn/appreciate the new place - and soon I will find it hard to leave there too....such a tough cycle of loss and love - I wish you luck on your journey; there is a time for every new place and a reason (which you already know), try to focus on the positives in that reason to balance the grief somewhat. Phew, that's a long comment, should have had a "side blog" going!! Cheers

No one has ever said change is easy. We all become creatures of habit. It is a hard and tough process to get through. Even though these last few weeks you have here in NY will probably be the hardest on you guys. You should look back on all the good things that it has brought into your lives.

I am sure there are lots of great memories that you will take with you... friendships that were made will survive if they are meant to be. No matter how far friends are from each other they are always close in one another's thoughts.

I am sure you guys will come back and visit one day with those beautiful girls of yours and tell them lots of stories about where they were born and see and do some of the things you ran out of time to do.

Never beat yourself up for being uninspired...it will pass and you will be back into this game called life, once you guys are settled into your new home and get the next chapter in your lives started.

Remember that there are lots of people wishing you guys well... so remember that when all this packing and transition is weighing heavy on you.

I just have to say the pics of the girls are too cute. They are getting so big and those chubby little faces are just precious. The pic of you with your daughter is just precious, I think being a daddy suits you.

One never understands just how long your workouts are, now I kind of get an understanding of them... myself swimming today and just hitting a goal of 1650yds and it was not even planning, that was a bit of work... I can never imagine swimming 4000yds in one shot.

Good luck with cleaning out the studio tomorrow... after the move I can't wait to hear about how the Dorothy project turns out... I know you will finish it.

Happy for you guys... but you all will be missed. If you leave it up to the higher powers it does all work out in the end.

The line that you wrote "I will always be a New Yorker at heart but the southerner is in my blood."... I think that is true of many people who spend a little part of their lives here in this big beautiful city, you can't help to fall in love with this place and take some of it back with you.

Please do keep the blogging up... I am sure it is not just me that wants to be kept updated on the Kendall happening... whether it be the girl... train ... or life in general... you always seem to keep it interesting!

jason, what a nice post about roxy. i remember well that terrifying stare she'd give...and her frustratingly non-directive directives: "this idea is good, but you really need to PUSH IT further." all those hours spent trying to figure out what the $#@& that meant and how to do it made me a better artist for sure.

WOW this entry was rather touching especially you sharing how special Roxy was to you. It made me think of the mentors that shaped my life... My 8th grade Science teacher who I still keep in touch with and flourished my love of science... and the one person who said to me one day after taking her class "you would make a great instructor"!

Well, I believe everything happens for a reason, first of all and my finding her picture wasn't just a coincidence. Maybe it was her trying to talk to you from above. Being a teacher is one of the most rewarding jobs there is. People say it is a thankless job but that isn't true. I think those are the people who look at it as a job and not a career. I have had so many students in the 11 years I have been teaching (yes it has been that long) and I never know who truly hears what I try to teach them but educationally as well as socially. I recall a young boy named Tyler who was in my class about 5 years ago. He was a good student, one who had been held over the previous year. He also had brain surgery as a baby so he was delayed a bit but bigger than the other students because he was older. He left my 1st grade class and I never saw him again because his family moved to California. last year, I received an email from his mother saying he was graduating from Elementary School and that I was his favorite teacher. I gave him the confidence to succeed and work hard.
My point is, I believe success lies in the hands of the people around you and how they look at you, not in how you see yourself. Roxy was successful because she passed on her knowledge as a teacher and a mother. You, my love, are successful in so many ways. When we do move back, you are going to be and already are successful because you moved away to live your dream, something that most people don't have the guts to even make that first step. Your girls will never look at you and say, "Thanks Dad, for staying in New York to continue your art career" but Thanks Dad for loving me enough to always put me first whatevever that means. Isn't that what our parents did and still do today?

After reading your comment, I wish to say that I had the answer, but maybe it is only the answer to me. We all have the answer, but it looks different to each of us. For me, everything finally broke, and the house of cards fell to the ground in a messy pile. While I have not given up triathlons, I had to give up the mentality I had about racing and my training. My family was suffering, badly. My mind was consumed.

So, "what makes one matter in this world?" Hmm. For me? It is realizing that my family deserved so much more than I was giving them. That when my life is over, triathlons will mean absolutely positively nothing whatsoever...but being a good mother and a good wife and a good daughter of God? Yeah, totally matters.

faith--very nice parallel to roxy. not only did her art career exist (and thrive) outside of nyc, but she didn't even start making art until later in life, after she'd raised her family. without getting all proverbial ("where there's a will, there's a way...") the point is: what you make and how you make it are much more important than where and when you make it (and with what frequency). i haven't *officially* made a finished (read: editioned) book in, gasp, five years...but i still consider myself a book artist, albeit a (temporarily!) lapsed one.

lately i daydream about someday spending time in my home studio, babies and dogs chilling in the background...

and as for the crossroads, i'm sure she came and went many times...

That's right, if it is meant to be it will happen. We, especially me, need to b open to all possibilities so that we can make the right decision for all four of us. Though in the big scheme of things, mommy and daddy will always come second.
I don't know how you are continuing to train and help me with the girls. I guess being able to have some "thinking time" while training helps to energize you physically and mentally.
Now, maybe I can voice this through my comments and get through my thoughts without too many tears. As I came across Roxy's memorial picture the other day (for those of you who don't know Roxy, she was a very special professor in Jason's undergrad career), I thought about her life as an artist and teacher. I wondered if she ever came to the crossroads that you are right now as an artist. Then I thought about yours and Sara's comments about her funeral. She never made it to live in New York (that I know of). She never had a big show in Chelsea. But her life mattered. She impacted so many people, artists and nonartists. So my question is this..... What makes one matter in this world? Is it the ability to be in magazines and have people write articles about you? Is it having your work displayed so the art lovers as well as random people can judge your work? Or is it what people will say on the day of your death about the decisions you made in life and how you treated people?

i love that picture of you and little miss l (since i can't tell them apart yet i'll just refer to them both that way...). saturday was so nice -- great to see you guys after too long and so nice to meet the new kendalls. you could probably tell that that was only the second time i've held a baby; looking forward to more practice.

on another note, this jumped right out at me: "I can’t wait to make art again!" harness that rare and fleeting feeling (well, it is for me, anyway -- for you i'm guessing the "feeling rested" part is more fleeting these days...) and DO WORK! ;)

I must say I loved the way you wrote about your early morning ride/commute... I could visually see it in my mind. I am not an early morning riser but on occasion I have seen it and I can see why you do it.

About your editing of your blog... writing at the spur of the moment when it is fresh in your head is the best way to do it...
